When someone is unable to make decisions for himself or herself (usually a child or someone who has become incapacitated through age, medical condition, or disability), a guardianship might need to be created to benefit that person. In New Jersey, a guardianship should only be established if it is deemed necessary. The court can appoint a guardian of the person, a guardian of the estate, or both.
